The Power of Rust !

You've probably heard about wall tie corrosion; this photograph illustrates a more dramatic situation which I found on a Building Survey for a retail tenant.

The steel lintels in the building have corroded after long term exposure to seaside air. Expansion of the metal as it corrodes is lifting the brickwork on the top half of the building. Eventually, the lintels will weaken and collapse bringing down all the loose brickwork above.

The £30,000 cost of repairs would fall on the new tenant who promptly pulled out of the deal.
